Totally Spies-Spies in Space #4-by Mark Lerer and Jim Salicrup

Totally Spies: Spies in Space is a girl-power graphic science fiction novel. The story is about three high-school girlfriends, of course one blonde, one red-head, and one brunette, who set of to rescue their favorite band who has gone missing on their journey to play a concert on the moon. They are outfitted with high-tech space gadgets, and set off chasing clues, looking for the missing band. They run into Ziggy, one of the rock-stars, who tells them that he and the other band members were kidnapped by aliens, and only Ziggy was able to escape. When the girls reach the other band members, they realize that it is not aliens who kidnapped the band, but a man-made robot working for Ziggy in his attempt to get rid of his band mates to become a one-man solo band. The girls defeat the robot, and Ziggy’s chances for solo stardom are ruined. The moon broadcast goes on, and the girls take Ziggy’s place as the new lead singers for the concert. Back at school they are more popular then ever. Other than the emphasis on popularity at the end of the book and the valley girl stereotypes, I think that this book would be good addition to a classroom library. It is a book that promotes strong and smart women, and could also get students interested in space. It is a good book for students to pick up and read for pleasure, and while there are some issues with the emphasis on popularity at the end, I think that it has an overall good message of friendship and strong female characters.
